5. ATP's Goal and Activities
1)  Our Goal
Television has a tremendous impact on public life and plays an increasingly wideranging social role. Accordingly, our goal is to improve the quality and content of television programming and thus enhance and enrich the broadcasting environment and cultural life of Japan.
2) Our Principal Activities

(1)  ATP Symposium

We present an annual symposium on topics of import to production companies and the broadcasting industry, as one of the events marking Telecommunications Month (May 15-June 15). A focus of the symposium is the media's diversification into fields like digital terrestrial broadcasting and broadband. Members of the general public are welcome and admission is free of charge.

(2)  ATP Awards

Our annual awards ceremony honors the remarkable achievements of individuals and groups in the television production field, including the year's most outstanding programs. Among the awards presented are the Grand Prize, the Public Management Minister's Award, and the Television Journalists' Award. Honorees receive the bronze statuette "Rendezvous," created by the renowned Japanese artist Masuo Ikeda (1934-1997), depicting the coming together of performer, producer, broadcaster, and viewer.

(3)  TV-EXM

This large-scale employment conference/seminar is held every May in Tokyo and Osaka for students who plan to pursue careers in television program production. Featuring information on numerous production companies and interviews with company representatives, the Tokyo and Osaka events bring together a total of over 40 TV production companies and over 2,000 students.

(4)  ATP Seminars
The medium of television depends entirely upon the vision of each individual creator, and a production company's one and only asset is its people. We hold the ATP Seminar in Tokyo and Osaka (with the cooperation of TV stations based in these cities) to help foster the professional development of young people in the TV production industry. We also offer events like the  New Employees Joint Training Seminar, held in the month of April--the time of year when our member companies welcome their new hirees.

(5)  Distribution of Compensation Fees for Home Video Copying
As a member of an association of copyright holders, ATP receives proceeds from the Private Copying Levy and distributes them among its member companies. (This is the sole financial benefit that production companies derive from membership in ATP.) Implemented in July 1999, the Private Copying Levy assesses additional consumption fees for home recording devices, to compensate copyright holders for the private copying of television programs for home viewing (permitted due to copyright restrictions).

(6)  International Exchange
ATP is committed to actively exchanging information with industry members worldwide. In addition to regular cooperative activities with the Korea Independent Production Association (the Korean counterpart of ATP), we organize an annual tour to the NAB Show (National Association of Broadcasters electronic media show) in Las Vegas. We also have a number of new projects on the horizon, including an exhibit at MIPTV, the international television program trade fair held in Cannes, France.
